Dr. Beutel’s areas of specialization include the economics of antitrust and intellectual property, industrial organization, and econometrics. Dr. Beutel works primarily in three practice areas: intellectual property, antitrust analysis, and the evaluation of commercial damages. In his intellectual property practice, Dr. Beutel has worked on patent and trademark infringement disputes, and matters requiring the valuation of intangible assets, such as for business dissolution, to satisfy FASB standards, or for determining intracompany transfer prices. In his antitrust and commercial damages practice, Dr. Beutel has assessed the competitive effects of mergers and acquisitions, and has assessed both liability and damages in disputes related to predatory pricing, price discrimination, monopolization, restraints on distributors, boycotts, and breach of contract. Dr. Beutel’s experience has covered a variety of industries, including technology, consumer products, medical devices, media, financial services, and energy and utilities, among others. He has testified in court and has appeared before antitrust enforcement agencies. Before joining NERA, Dr. Beutel was an Assistant Professor of Economics at Miami University (Ohio), where he taught courses in microeconomic theory and antitrust and trade regulation.
